Nathaniel at Riding for the Disabled
Riding therapy to improve Nathaniel's motor skills
Riding for the Disabled provides horse riding and associated activities for more than 200 people with disabilities each year at its “Tall Timbers” centre.
Nathaniel is 23 years old. He has an intellectual disability and associated coordination problems. Nathaniel began horse riding at Riding for the Disabled in 2001. At first, he was afraid. Now he is more confident and looks forward to visits. His motor skills have picked up noticeably and Nathaniel now has a job at an engineering company, as a facilities officer, working 30 hours a week. Without the skills that RDA helped him develop, such employment would not be possible.
Judy Brightman from RDA says, “This activity helps to develop the participants’ social skills, as they are interacting with other people. Interaction with animals is another benefit, which is particularly good for those who have autism. We focus on what they can do, rather than what they can’t do. Disabled riders benefit both physical and psychological aspects. Riding may also reinforce literacy, numeracy and social skills all whilst enjoying a stimulating activity."
In 2007 United Way is providing funding for feed, vet expenses and other needs for the horses allowing clients, such as Nathaniel, access to the RDA service.
