Frequently Asked Questions

Why Should I donate to United Way?

One Donation Helps Many…

By donating to United Way Queensland, you can be assured that your money is going to those who need it most and to organisations with the greatest impact.

United Way has a 120 history and experience of building strong communities around the world and United Way Queensland is able to utilise this experience in your local community.

We have a proven track record of success, no religious or political affiliations and can respond effectively to community needs as they arise.

We guarantee that at least 90 cents of every dollar donated through workplace giving programs will go to health and welfare projects in your local community.

How Does United Way Queensland Cover its Costs?

We are able to distribute 90 cents of every workplace giving donation because we operate with the assistance of volunteers and because of the support of our corporate partners. For example, corporates pay a management fee for Corporate Connect and Seeing is Believing activities; service providers such as Reel Image provides pro-bono design and multi-media services; and some corporates with a full Community Investment Program pay an implementation fee. These fees are in effect donations, as United Way Queensland is also a charity with deductible gift recipient status via the United Way Queensland Public Fund.

How Can I Find Out Where my Donation Goes?

As a donor you can receive our regular newsletters which detail where donations have been allocated. As a corporate partner you can elect to partake in Seeing is Believing activities whereby you can visit the organisations who have received a donation from you to see how the money was spent.

Is my Donation Tax Deductible?

Yes, any donation over $2 is tax deductible. Your donation can be taken from your pre-tax salary so you receive an immediate tax deduction. If your donation is also matched by your employer, it is matched at its pre-tax level, so the donation to the community organisation is enhanced. For example:

The Power of Leverage – 3 Scenarios
Monthly donation $30 $15 $10
Less tax deduction ($9) ($4.50) ($3)
Net reduction in take home pay $21 $10.50 $7
Staff donation $30 $15 $10
Corporate Match $30 $15 $10
Total community donation per month $60 $30 $20

(illustrative example only assuming a 30% marginal tax rate)

How Does United Way Allocate Donations?

United Way Queensland has an Allocations Committee, which consists of Board members and donors. The committee considers applications from community organisations and makes allocations according to a set criteria.
